Your puppy has eaten one shoe, attempted to eat the other, chewed through a phone charger, knocked over a glass of water, peed in three different rooms in the span of an hour, and is currently zooming around the living room at 11 PM like a small furry hurricane. And you are starting to wonder if something is deeply wrong with this specific animal.

Nothing is wrong with this specific animal. You have a puppy. This is exactly what puppies do.

The Puppy Brain Is Different

Puppies are not miniature adult dogs. Their brains are still forming, their impulse control is essentially nonexistent, and their understanding of cause and effect is rudimentary at best. When your puppy bites your hand, it is not an act of aggression. When they zoom at midnight, it is not malice. When they chew the corner of your sofa, it is because they have an urgent need to chew something and the sofa was the most accessible option.

Expecting a puppy to understand rules that have not been consistently taught yet, and to control impulses that their brain is not yet capable of controlling, is genuinely unfair. This does not mean you cannot guide their behaviour. It means that guidance requires patience, repetition, and consistency rather than frustration and correction.

What Actually Helps

Supervision and management. A puppy that cannot be watched should be safely confined in a playpen or crate. Not as punishment, but because an unsupervised puppy will find something expensive to destroy or somewhere inappropriate to eliminate. This is physics, not personality.

Redirect rather than scold. When the puppy is doing something they should not, calmly interrupt and redirect them to something appropriate. Chewing your shoes? Offer a chew toy and praise the moment they engage with it. The puppy is not being bad. They are doing exactly what their developmental stage demands. Your job is to channel it, not punish it. The phase passes. The relationship you build during it does not.
