Things You Don't Actually Need to Buy for Your Puppy
Share
The puppy industrial complex is real and it wants your money. The moment you start searching for puppy supplies online, an algorithm activates that believes your puppy cannot thrive without a self-cleaning water fountain, a GPS-enabled smart collar, and a bamboo-infused orthopedic mat.
Here is an honest list of things you do not need, so you can spend that money on things that actually matter.
Puppy Perfume and Cologne
Your puppy smells like a puppy. This is fine. Dogs have scent glands that produce species-specific smells essential for their communication and sense of self. Applying synthetic fragrance over this is unpleasant for the dog and serves no purpose beyond human aesthetics. Regular baths with an appropriate shampoo are sufficient. The puppy does not need to smell like lavender.
A Very Expensive Dog Bed in Week One
Your puppy will chew their bed. This is statistical certainty, not pessimism. A 4,000-rupee orthopedic bed in the first three months is a 4,000-rupee chew toy. Start with a simple, washable, moderately priced option. Graduate to the nice bed when the puppy has demonstrated basic self-restraint and the teething phase has passed. You have time.
Seventeen Types of Treats
One or two types of soft, small, high-value training treats are all you need. Variety sounds appealing but a rotating treat buffet introduces new ingredients constantly, which makes digestive tracking impossible and prevents you from identifying what works best as a training motivator. Pick one thing your puppy is excited about and use it consistently.
What You Actually Should Spend On
A quality puppy food appropriate for your breed. Proper veterinary care including vaccinations and deworming. A durable, appropriately sized crate. Stainless steel bowls. Two or three good chew toys. That is genuinely most of the foundation. The rest can be added based on specific needs as they arise, not because a shopping algorithm decided your puppy needed it before you even brought them home.
