In cooler months, your dog had a coat that gleamed. You were proud of it. Strangers commented on it at the park. Now it is May and the coat looks like it lost a fight with the weather, which, to be fair, is exactly what happened.
A dull or lacklustre coat in summer is one of the most common cosmetic complaints among dog parents, and it usually has a perfectly straightforward explanation.
Why Summer Dulls the Coat
Heat and sun exposure affect the outer layer of the hair shaft, stripping natural oils and causing the surface to look flat rather than reflective. This is the same principle that causes human hair to look dry after beach holidays, just applied to fur. Double-coated breeds shed heavily in summer, and a coat in mid-shed never looks its best. The new coat growing in is finer and shorter, while the old coat is loosening, and the transition period is cosmetically awkward.
Dehydration also affects coat quality more than most people realise. Water is essential for cell function in the skin, and when a dog is not drinking enough, the first visible sign is often in the coat rather than behaviour. A mildly dehydrated dog may look and act fine but carry a coat that is visibly less glossy than it should be.
What Actually Helps
Hydration first. If your dog is drinking well and the coat is still dull, add a small amount of fish oil or flaxseed oil to their food. Omega-3 fatty acids are directly responsible for coat sheen, and many dogs in India do not get adequate amounts from their regular diet. A teaspoon of fish oil per day for a medium-sized dog makes a visible difference within three to four weeks.
Regular brushing matters more in summer than in any other season. Brushing distributes natural oils through the coat, removes the dead fur that makes the coat look flat, and stimulates the skin to produce more of the oils responsible for shine. Five minutes of brushing every two days is more effective than an occasional thorough grooming session. Keep the coat clean with monthly baths using a shampoo with moisturising ingredients, and the summer dullness will improve considerably before June arrives.
